Terror & Hope: Christians of the Middle East
Description
Terror & Hope: Christians of the Middle East is a direct comparison between Christians who have fled Iraq and Christians who live freely within Israel, a democratic state. This photographic story strives to draw attention to the terror and hope in their eyes. For the Iraqi Christians, their terror comes from extreme persecution and they fear for their lives. For Israeli Christians, their hope can be seen as they and their children freely believe in and practice Christianity. In conjunction with the Philos Project, photographer and artist Rachael Lynn Reynolds uses the power of art to educate the Western world on the persecution these Middle Eastern Christians face, hoping to inspire the Church to better love our international brothers and sisters.
Rachael Lynn Reynolds BIO:
Rachael Lynn Reynolds is a graduate of Hillsdale College in Michigan, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in art. She also spent time studying photography and art history at the Florence University of Art in Florence, Italy. Rachael currently teaches in the East Phoenix Valley, AZ. Rachael began her studies as an art major where she studied photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, graphics, and art history. Learning so many mediums has had great impact on her work and given her the ability to blur the lines between mediums–deepening the expression of her images. She also gained a tremendous amount of appreciation for learning about those who came before her and understanding their work. Learning from these artists and how their personalities and experiences influenced their art contributed to Rachael finding what influences hers: nature and human nature. In Rachael's work she suggests that they are both related and the same, often using alternative techniques.
A love for people and their cultures has driven Rachael to use her art for cultural advocacy. Rachael plans to dedicate her work to educating others, using photography to capture distinct moments filled with character and meaning. Her photographs provide compelling narratives that advocate for the world’s persecuted. She aims to continue the fight for human rights and for women’s rights. With the Philos Project, an organization that promotes positive Christian engagement in the Middle East, Rachael participated in the 2018 Philos Leadership Institute. On this trip she traveled to Jordan and Israel where she focused her efforts on drawing comparison between Christians living in Israel and Christians who are displaced because of persecution. She has also traveled to Israel as a participant, fellow, and photographer with Passages Israel and enjoyed documenting the experiences of Christian college students in the Holy Land. Rachael looks forward to continuing to use her role as an artist to advocate for human rights.
About the Philos Project and the Philos Leadership Institute:
The Philos Project is a dynamic leadership community dedicated to promoting positive Christian engagement in the Middle East. We offer educational resources, immersive travel programs, and networking and advocacy opportunities that engage complex issues and advance liberty in the region. The leaders we develop are principled, relational, and action-oriented. In short, we believe that innovative ideas presented to an empowered network lead to effective action and positive change in the Middle East.
The Philos Leadership Institute is a heavily subsidized, 2-week summer institute designed for Christian men and women between the ages of 18-35 who have a serious interest in working in a field that impacts the Middle East. Each year, we seek out the 40 most promising young Christian leaders in policy, media, ministry, education, medicine, business, the arts, and activism. Graduates of PLI are empowered in their Middle East engagement through a rigorous curriculum, leadership training, and exposure to a multitude of perspectives on the ground in the Middle East. We seek to educate and empower a new generation of leaders in order to facilitate long-term change in the region. Exchange of ideas and experiences are at the heart of the PLI program—which is why we work hard to bring together an ethnically and geographically diverse group of young professionals and students. Participants in previous cohorts hailed from Europe, South America, Central America, Canada, and the United States.

Each of the below pieces (10 total) are 20x30" prints framed and matted. Each piece, including frame size is approximately W:28 1/8" x H:38 1/8" and can be hung or displayed on easels.
The projects purpose is to display the contrast between the terror and hope in each of their eyes: the terror in the Iraqi Christians' eyes and the hope that is seen in the Israelis' eyes. When displayed, it is preferred that equal amounts of each demographic be present and this concept be in mind when designing the exhibit. Please contact Rachael for questions related.
